Boost your digital skills

4. Think about reuse

Explore tools that already exist to avoid duplication and save time and money

What is it good for?

  • Building an understanding of what's already out there
  • Getting inspiration from what you're already doing well in your organisation
  • Getting inspiration from other organisations and services that might be solving the same challenges as you
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Saving time and money
  • Reducing risk
  • Getting your team involved

When to use it

Once you've got an idea you want to start testing or developing.

How to use it

This is essentially your second piece of desk research.

  1. Make a list of your organisation's existing skills, tools and assets. This provides a lot of inspiration for your project.
  1. Do the same for the external environment - looking outside of your organisation and even the charity sector can help identify other similar services that might be addressing the same user needs as you.
  1. This is also a good time to review whether the problem has been attempted to be solved before and where you can learn more about this. Service Recipes can be helpful for this task.

Inspiration can come from anywhere; it's helpful to sign up to the Catalyst newsletter.
